Some furious and heavy death metal here that sounds like a mix of the Swedish and Florida schools of death metal. Mostly old school at its core, Taphos' death metal also throws in the speed and heaviness that some of the heavyweights of the genre have been playing since the late '90s, so this is pretty relentless stuff with speed, speed, speed and freight-train heaviness. While a lot of this is sheer destruction, there are more dark atmospheric passages that ooze a malevolent vibe—I wish they had banked on this a little more as, for the little of it that can be found here, the band do this very effectively. That would have made Come Ethereal Somberness quite a chilling album. An enjoyable slab of pounding, fast death metal. |
