I have to give this Polish band by the name of Armagh credit for nailing the sound of the early NWOBHM on their second album, Serpent Storm. The echo-soaked vocals, the simple, straightforward riffing, the direct songwriting, it's all there and if you told me this album was a reissue from 1982, I'd have no trouble at all believing you. They play fast a lot of the time, not the speed metal of early Exciter or Megadeth, but brisk enough, though they also make use of more moderately paced tempos. Apart from the authentic sound, there isn't a lot on Serpent Storm that sticks around for me after it is over. I enjoy it quite a bit while it is on, but I couldn't come up with a song title or a hook if you paid me, even though I've listened to it several times. I love old-school metal, so I'll never turn an album like Serpent Storm down, but I'd like to have a few more riffs or choruses I can sink my teeth into on the next go round. Fans of '80s-era European bands like Dragonslayer and Crossfire should give Armagh a listen. |
