Tanith is a side project from Satan guitarist Russ Tippins and Voyage is their second album. They play music that is a mix of hard rock and heavy metal with unusual lyrical topics. Their style is reminiscent of the proto-metal bands from the late '70s (Scorpions, UFO, Uriah Heep, etc.) but with a modern production. Their songwriting is melodic and smooth with plenty of hooks, but I'll come right out and say many of the tracks here are plain hard rock while others flirt with heavy metal more. "Snow Tiger" reminds me of Haunt with its rambunctious and accessible sound and "Seven Moons (Galantia Pt. 2)", which is my favorite track, brings me back to Rush albums from the '70s. On the other hand, "Flame" sounds like a Foo Fighters song (a good one, to be fair, but not really metal). I'm reviewing this because it's good, if you like accessible hard rock/heavy metal, because Tippins is a name well known to heavy metal/NWOBHM fans, and Voyage is being released by Metal Blade Records. Those last two items may fool some fans who can now go into this release with open eyes and ears. I grew up in the '70s, so this kind of slightly weird, yet catchy music was the gateway to heavy metal for me. If you like a little hard rock now and then, by all means check it out, but if you like straight up heavy metal, you'll probably want to pass. |
