Overkill have been around for over 40 years (well, two original members, two who have been in for over 20 and one for the last 5 years), with their first album released 38 years ago, and that makes Scorched even more impressive as it showcases a band that sounds like it hasn't lost the fire. They've had a few so-so albums here and there, but for the most part their discography is rock-solid. There's nothing new on Scorched: it's Overkill through and through, exactly the kind of thrash one can expect from them. They have a good formula and they're sticking to it. Fast, tight, catchy thrash is what you're served on this 51-minute platter. Blitz still sounds great, instantly recognizable and delivering catchy lines that'll stick in your head right away. The songs are mostly fast-paced and quite melodic and it's hard to stay put with the blazing guitar work and thundering drums; it's just non-stop and when it's over you're left wondering what train just ran you over. I usually frown at thrash albums that go over 40 minutes as they often overstay their welcome, but there's nothing skippable on this one. A lot of bands of the same era have completely changed or are releasing lacklustre material, but Overkill prove you can stick to your guns and still sound fresh.
