This is an interesting black metal EP that starts off pretty fast and then morphs into a slower and ambient affair. The first song is really no-holds-barred black metal, fast but also melodic and melancholic, nothing fancy, with vocals that are just low enough in the mix to let the music do the talking. The second and third tracks are more like a creepy interlude and could have come right off one of those '70s occult rock albums. Very effective, the kind of stuff that reminds me when we'd go into a basement, turn off the lights and play that kind of album to scare ourselves. The last track goes back to black metal, but it's a slow one this time, quite doomy and gloomy, you can feel the anguish emanating from the speakers. Kind of depressing this one, I must say. In some 23 minutes, Ossaert take us through three very different styles, all of which they do very well. |
