Grim Justice out of Vienna, Austria has been around since 2010 and Justice in the Night is their third full-length album. Originally released independently in 2022, in 2023 Iron Shield Records is giving it a CD release. They play doomy heavy metal that is simple and straight to the point with some pretty good riffs on tracks like "Justice in the Night" and "Curse of the Moon", two of the more up-tempo cuts. These, along with the next two, are traditional heavy metal in style while the remaining four songs skew slower and doomier, so you can think of Justice in the Night as having a "trad side" (Side A) and a "doom side" (Side B) if you want to put things in a vinyl perspective. "Terminus III" evokes mid-70s Black Sabbath with a nice acoustic opening followed by fuzzier guitars for the remainder of the track. The songwriting isn’t bad, except maybe "Hey Angel" which is dull and plodding, but I don’t hear a whole lot that stands out, either. The real negatives are the production, which is flat and sterile, with the vocals sounding like they were recorded at another time and place and added without much effort to integrate them, and the rest of the performances, which are lifeless, especially on the second half of the album. I’m sure some of this is the result of the band putting the album together themselves, but they sound like they are just going through the motions on songs like "When Night Falls" and "Argus". I think this band can do good things, but there isn’t a whole lot of evidence to back me up on Justice in the Night. |
