Formed from the ashes of Jesse Kämäräinen’s previous band, Inkvisitor, Anzillu (ancient Sumerian for "Abomination," or so they say. I don’t speak dead languages, so I’ll defer to their translation) work in an eclectic style that the band simply calls "extreme metal." To my ears, the main base of their work is definitely modern thrash, but they throw a lot of strange ideas into the mix that makes it stand out a lot from other contemporary thrash acts. There are certainly roots in more metallic strains of hardcore punk to be found too, most notably on the careening "Dauntless" and with the frenzied hardcore delivery of vocalist Teemu Kemppainen. His vocals may be the biggest sticking point for some, but I think he adds to the aggression and carnage of the band’s versatile approach like a shot of shark adrenaline, and he even displays some surprising versatility on the title track with a style somewhere between Autopsy and Alice in Chains. They certainly won’t be for everyone, but for my money, Anzillu are an exciting new act whose endless energy and defiance of convention mark them as potential underground darlings. Get this and I’m sure you’ll agree. |
