Well, I am glad to see Blazon Rite have improved, even if I would not say they are good yet. This is more of the same kind of Trad Metal they played on their previous album, and almost every facet has gotten better, just not enough. The riffs are better, and Pierson Roe's lead work remains a highlight, but the overall production is still weak, with the guitars and vocals very upfront but nothing really backing them up, so the sound doesn't have any layers or depth. Vocalist Johnny Halladay has gotten better, but that just means he has gone from "embarrassing" to "not as embarrassing". His rough approach should work for this kind of stuff, but he's just not enough on the note, and he tries to overcome that with energy but can't quite get there. Again, this is a band who have the right idea, they just can't seem to pull it off–but they are getting closer. |
