Drakon Ho Megas is a Greek band that plays black metal very much in line with that country's uniquely identifiable take on the style. That means main man Apostate Archangel (guitars, keyboards) and his cohorts (Lord Nero on vocals, Mars Triumph on bass) imbue the music with a good deal of melody and a warmer production than is typical for black metal on their second album, Coming of the Antichrist. Songs like "There Where the Darkness Reigns" and "Coming of the Antichrist" have a dark and menacing atmosphere but also beautiful melodies that coexist in a complementary yet opposing fashion. Lord Nero brings more than a standard rasp to the party, becoming downright feral on cuts like "Abyss" and even injecting some death growls on "Abaddon (The Angel of the Abyss)". As I said, the production is warmer than, say, Scandinavian black metal, and the bass guitar is much more prominent, giving Coming of the Antichrist a fuller sound that may not please all fans of raw black metal, but those looking to explore the genre might find a bit easier to transition with. It is a creepy, powerful, atmospheric and melodic effort with some stronger than average songwriting that should go down well with fans of Greek black metal. |
