It has taken me a few spins of Master Dy's second album, Legacy of Satan, to appreciate the style of power metal this Portuguese band plays. The band's aesthetic is similar to Ghost's, with makeup, pseudonyms, and catchy music, but Master Dy is firmly metal without the pop aspirations. They have a solid power metal foundation, as is evident on double-kick burners like "Legacy of Satan," but they also lean into gothic metal in a few places and even crank up the drums to blast velocity and employ a style of guitar playing not far removed from black metal's tremolo picking on "Devil May Cry." Front woman Dy MooB has a good voice and serves the songs fine, but I really don't hear the kind of bombast and charisma the music really calls for. Regardless, Legacy of Satan is a varied and entertaining album that is worth putting in a few extra spins.
