After some well-received EPs and a 10-minute single, Transgressive have finally released their first full-length with Extreme Transgression, and it's pretty much all I could ask for. Like the previous releases, this is composed of searing, spiteful thrash with chugging riffs, sharp and sometimes gorgeous lead work, and Alicia's hateful, venomous thrash vocals. At the end of the day, that's all you really need to make a good thrash album, but what makes Transgressive different from the norm is that their aggression is entirely authentic and based on the real lived experiences of the band members and that the members come together donate all proceeds to the non-profit organization Trans Lifeline, making them the rare band that puts their money where their mouth is when it comes to their message and does so as a pure act of defiance to the norm. All of that would be noble but misguided if the music was lacking, but their righteous fury and serious intent can be felt from the opening licks of "Thirteen Twelve" to the crushing "Landlord Liquifier" to the blazing album highlight "Bury Me in Rainbow Flags", and any attempt to separate that intent from the music would be to completely dispose of it. I suppose those who don't care for overt politics in their music might be turned off despite the killer fucking music found here, but then what the fuck are you listening to thrash for to begin with if that actually bothers you, you fucking wimp? Go buy this album for the good music it contains and the good cause it supports. |
