Messe Mortuaire started off as Sepulchral from 1989 to 1993, then made a comeback in 2015 and eventually changed its name to Messe Mortuaire. Good move, considering there are a few bands named Sepulchral. This is barebones, evil-sounding death metal and about the only frills you'll get are some end-of-the-world bell sounds in the intro and outro. The vocals are undecipherable, a deep growl that is almost drowned by the music, and the atmosphere wouldn't be nearly as dark without that. It's mostly slow-ish to mid-paced, the kind of death metal that just chugs along and calls for a slow headbang motion and nothing more. There's no doom here, but the heaviness and relatively slow speed sure give it a bit of a doomy vibe. It's not exactly remarkable, but it's good while it's on. |
