This is a trip back in time to the early to mid-90s. Grymmstalt's black metal is raw, atmospheric and melodic, coming off as both sorrowful and haunting. Throw in some cavernous screeches that sound like the screams of someone stuck in the depths of hell. The more atmospheric songs from early Burzum come to mind and, not as popular a reference, on "Nachsinnen" I was reminded a little bit of Old Forest's first album, just more raw and minimalistic. This is not black metal that rocks and it certainly won't brighten anyone's gloomy day. It's kind of monotonous, in a good way, just chugging along with those absolutely haunting screams in tow. It's both depressing and relaxing, but ultimately beautiful in the darkest of ways. |
