Sordid Blade is a new band out of Sweden that is joining the epic metal fray with their debut, Every Battle Has Its Glory. They've got the right idea with some solid riffs, a good amount of atmosphere and epic lyrical themes. There are songs that gallop ("Every Battle Has Its Glory," "My Guarded Home") and others that go for a slower roll that really leans into evoking images of faraway lands lost in time ("Halfway to Heaven"). Typically, this is the kind of stuff I really enjoy, but the singing is a letdown. There's nothing wrong with Niklas Holm's voice, but his approach is very laid back and understated, so much so that it doesn't add any energy or enthusiasm to the songs and actually take away from the excitement of the guitar work. Musically, Every Battle Has Its Glory is all-in on the vibe of misty, open heaths and deserted plains, like a mix between early Manilla Road and new bands like Spell. That recipe sounds good to me, but Sordid Blade need a different vocal approach if they want to make any epic metal waves.
