I'll admit, I've always been into the unforgiving aggressive and pissed-off, untamed energy of Hardcore Punk that has a metallic edge to it, so hearing a band work in that style through the lens of Death Metal catches my attention all the more. Get the Shot are definitely the latter, and their aptly titled album, Merciless Destruction, is a strong example of how you mix the crushing heaviness of Death Metal with the feral anger of Hardcore to make something that's as destructive as a Su-34 bomber laying waste to some peaceful, remote village. The guitar sound reminds me a bit of early Machine Head and the vocals range from typical Hardcore shouts to Glen Benton-esque grunting, all of which fits the relentless ultra-beatdown of the compositions perfectly as they literally scream "Die motherfucker, die!" The one exception to that is the clean, ballad-esque "Seasons of the Damned II," whose clean singing mixed with chugging rhythms reminds me of Korn on steroids at best, and is as much a mood killer as that sounds. In fact, this entire review may well have turned you off of this band and album, but if you're like me and can appreciate the marriage of the two styles to make something primal and hateful in a way neither can really do alone, you'll want to give this a listen. |
