Hot on the heels of their self-titled EP, Triskelyon are back with a full-length album that keeps it short and sweet at just under 36 minutes. The first three tracks are the same as the ones on the EP, so we start in familiar territory. This time there are even more guest appearances, including some vocals by Amanda Marie Jackman of Category VI, mainman Geoff Waye's other band. There are also guest appearances on bass, so one can easily get lost in the who's-who game—I certainly did. ;) With some three people on vocals, one could adapt the old weather joke into "if you don't like the singer, just wait a few minutes." Something I find remarkable with Triskelyon is that despite the use of several singers, everything flows well together, the songs just fit and they don't skip a beat. Let's face it, a different singer is typically more noticeable than different players of various instruments, but here it just doesn't seem to matter. Only closer "Nobody's Business," a Billy Idol cover, feels like it doesn't quite belong as it's quite different from anything else on the album (though quite the ear worm, and the metal treatment is pretty cool). Heavy, pounding, in-your-face, power metal-laced thrash is mostly what the album is about, though they crank up the thrash a bit more this time around than on the EP. The style is a good mix of old-school and more modern metal (that being the power metal elements, mostly) that gets better with every listen. If you're getting tired of straight-up old-school thrash revival, Triskelyon are certainly worth checking out as they're doing something different enough to deserve your attention. |
