This is a very specific kind of old-school Death Metal, as it pretty much exists to evoke the sound of classic Morbid Angel albums and little else. Thus there is not any super-heavy, Swedish-style crunch, but rather intense, chaotic, and Thrash-inflected Death Metal. If you are a fan of Angelcorpse, Diocletian, or other Osmose-type bands that are much more percussive than melodic, then this is sure to do it for you. Guitarist Alessandro Nail tries hard for that Azagthoth atonal flailing on the leads, and he does pretty well, even if he's not on a par with Trey in his prime. I like that the songwriting has variety and isn't just a blur of speed, and I like that Nail's vocals are a nice dry bark like David Vincent in the old days. Not a lot of bands do this specific flavor of Death Metal anymore, and fewer do it this well. A really strong debut. |
