Third in the series of Therion re-releases from Hammerheart, this one could be called "Vovin, but with more guitars" because that's essentially what it is. Vovin was where Therion cast off their gothic sounds and became foremost a symphonic band, and this album is the sound of them walking that back a teensy bit and leaning more on the guitars. I like the slightly darker, harder sound on this, but I also think the songwriting is just not quite as good as it was on Vovin. This has the sound of a transitional album because it is, as the band would release the unqualified masterwork Secret of the Runes the following year. So Deggial is still very much the sound of Therion figuring their shit out. |
