With their last full length, Phobia, being released nearly a decade ago, there were many fools who believed that Finnish Death Metal kings Torture Killer had given up the ghost, but no, they have once again risen from the depths of the murky graveyards and secret catacombs they call home to deliver us a new EP with Dead Inside, complete with a killer cover from well-known cover artist Wes Benscoter. Since the band hasn't seen any lineup changes in that time, it's no surprise that the music on here sounds a lot like the songs on Phobia, though they are a bit thrashier than before. The opening title track and "Iniquity" has all the rhythms, riffs, and growls that only they can provide, and are damn stand out examples of all that, while "The Omen" is a brief instrumental with eerie keyboards, pianos, and acoustic work that might be a bit much for a three-track album, but has a cool horror movie atmosphere that fits the band perfectly. While this explores a slightly different facet of their distinctive sound, this is still Torture Killer through and through, and I for one am happy to see they still got it. |
