It’s been five years since the last album by this revered band, and even longer than that since they put out an album I actually liked. Their last work was the all-instrumental A Conscious Creation From the Isolated Domain - Phase I, which I found weak not because it was instrumental, but because the band had largely ditched their Death Metal sound for a far more progressive mode of songwriting. This band used to crank out albums of intricate but vicious metal like on their classic works Procession to the Infraworld and Conjuration of the Spectral Empire, and I am glad to see they have gone back to that.

This is the first album by The Chasm since The Spell of Retribution that actually sounds like The Chasm. You get that signature style of chugging heaviness leavened with twisting, involved melody and precise tremolo picking. Songs by this band always sound long, even when they really are not, because they pack so much in. Daniel Corchado’s vocals make a welcome return, and while I don’t think the production is as good as on some of their past works, it is really good to hear this band back doing what they are good at.
