Tank is one of the myriads of NWOBHM bands that I was aware of back in the day (and I even owned Honour & Blood at one point) that I ultimately never gave a lot of attention to, but thanks to High Roller Records re-releasing all their early albums, now I get my chance. Don't Walk Away is their debut EP (with some bonus demo and live tracks) and it is pretty obvious from the get-go these guys grew up listening to UFO, Thin Lizzy and other heroes of the '70s. "Don't Walk Away" and "Shellshock" have a thick hard rock streak running through them in terms of the riffs and verse, chorus, verse, solo songwriting, whereas on "Hammer On" you can hear more heavy metal in the energy and urgency, which reminds me a lot of Motörhead. The demo tracks aren't anything special, nor is the live version of "Don't Walk Away." Tank is a band that has had a long, storied, and complicated career and this is their first foray, so it isn't much of a surprise it is somewhat uneven and not sure what it wants to be. I wouldn't call Don't Walk Away a mandatory purchase unless you are a Tank or NWOBHM aficionado, but it is document of a notable band's beginnings and I'm glad High Roller Records is giving us a chance to hear it again.
