On first spin I was not much impressed by this, but I kept coming back to it, and now I like it really well. Tome of the Unreplenished are a band that seems to have started as a side project of two guys in the excellent, underrated Macabre Omen. This is much less about Bathory, however, than about mining that strike of mostly melodic, almost mellow Black Metal that grew out of bands like Blut Aus Nord and Agalloch. There is definitely a Macabre Omen style of epic riff-writing at work here, and the melodies are very similar, but rather than heavy, this is smooth. There are some electronic sounds worked in here, a lot of influence from Darkwave and Dark Neofolk, and some rather good clean singing in the mix. This is obviously all about atmosphere, and the band does that very well. If you like the mellower moments of bands like Sear Bliss or Runespell, this is another one to check out. |
