I haven't heard anything from Night Demon since I reviewed their self-titled EP back in 2013, and if their latest release, the "compilation" Year of the Demon, is an indication, I've been missing out. This "pandemic" project contains several singles they released in 2020 when touring was off the table, along with several covers from bands like Scorpions, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden and others. Night Demon are part of the NWOTHM resurgence, and their music features the clean singing, pounding rhythms and sweet solos that characterized the explosion of heavy metal in the early 1980s. Original songs like "Empires Fall" and "Kill the Pain" have the kind of driving tempos and shout-along choruses perfect for blasting on the car stereo while driving to a show while "Are You Out There" is a mid-paced anthem, not quite as exciting perhaps, but still solid. The covers are where Night Demon really shine on Year of the Demon. They totally rip up Cirith Ungol's "100 MPH," which features guest vocals from Tim Baker (the man still sounds great) and the guitar work on Maiden's "Wasted Years" is quite faithful to the original. There are two live Scorpions covers ("In Trance," "Top of the Bill") that have original Scorpions guitarist Uli Jon Roth playing on them that are also very well done, distinct but not so far from the source that they might as well be different songs. The singer is no Klaus Meine, but who is? Year of the Demon is an excellent effort from Night Demon with solid originals, nothing that sounds like a cast off from a past album, and well-executed covers. Don't hesitate to pick this up if traditional heavy metal is your thing.
