When The Troops of Doom first kicked down our doors and burned down our homesteads with their debut EP, The Rise of Heresy, I and every other Death/Thrash maniac out there were completely blown away as former Sepultura guitarist Jairo "Tormentor" Guedz proved that he still had what it takes decades after the fact. The following EP, Absence of Light, was more of the same, and both albums did an incredible job of making me and everyone else excited to see what they could do with a full-length. Now, nearly two years after they first formed, I finally have my bloody hands on Antichrist Reborn, and I'm happy to say that the wait was more than worth it. As you'd expect, this album is more of that old-school Sepultura Death/Thrash that has no ambitions other than adhering to the unholy doctrine of early Sepultura and Slayer as they pound your face into jelly. The only real difference between this and every other wannabe out there is that this is crafted by an expert hand that practically helped invent the genre, and he's proven to be one of the few people who can get my very selective air guitar hand and take me back to the bad old days of the mid-80s. I'd say more, but when you do something this traditional this perfectly, what else can I really say about this monstrous, bloodthirsty release besides the fact it could have easily been the follow up to Schizophrenia and been worshiped by the masses just as much? Take the blood of the innocent, mark your doors with an inverted cross, and prepare yourselves, for the antichrist is reborn, and he is coming to annihilate the world with his Troops of Doom! |
