After the huge leap in quality, The Silent Wedding took on their Enigma Eternal album compared to their debut, Livin Experiments, I was looking forward to album number three, Ego Path. I mentioned that the band name made me think of an act with a bit of gothic influences in their music and, after being absent on Enigma Eternal, they creep in on Ego Path. The band still plays power metal with progressive leanings, so we get big guitar chords and plenty of keyboards and mercifully no overindulgent playing, but the tone of the album and specifically songs like "Stealing the Sun" and "The Sea of Hate" skew darker than the last album. I find that there is a melancholic vibe that wasn't present before rather than what sounded defiant to my ears. I also feel like the singer, who has a good voice, relies on a limited number of vocal motifs and that gives the album a repetitive aspect as the lines from one song sound like the lines in several others. There are bright spots, notably the simple but effective "The Final Token" where the singing style really enhances the simple riffing. Ego Path is well played and sounds good, but overall, I find it a less exciting effort from The Silent Wedding. |
