Midnight Dice’s Hypnotized EP is a release I found browsing on Bandcamp Friday, looking for new bands releasing old-school metal. This band from Chicago has a great old-school vibe going on with some sharp, NWOBHM-style riffs, a great guitar sound and thunderous bottom end. After the instrumental opener, Midnight Dice hit you with their two best tracks, "Starblind" and "Speed City," the latter possessing an appropriate title as the track is Midnight Dice’s quickest and most immediate on Hypnotized. The other songs ("Hypnotized," "Lazer Tears") aren’t quite as catchy or exciting, but are not bad by any stretch. The singer has a clear, powerful voice and belts out the lyrics with plenty of enthusiasm and never strays out of key. Hypnotized is packed with the kind of muscular, pummeling metal that makes you want to bang your head while wondering why some bigger label hasn’t scooped up Midnight Dice. This is music for anyone that cut their teeth on Saxon and Diamond Head and is loving current released from Eternal Champion, Glacier, and Megaton Sword. |
