I’d never heard of this band from North Carolina until their third album, Riptime, dropped into my review queue. Mega Colossus plays amped up traditional heavy metal with lots of tasty guitars and a keen ear for vocal melodies and harmonies. Their lyrics alternate between dystopian, spacefaring sci-fi and earthbound fantasy. The combination of their style with lyrics that are somewhat different from a lot of other bands had me thinking of Walpyrgus with a dose of Blind Guardian and just a pinch of Slough Feg. "Midnight Zone" has a chorus that is from the same mold as Walpyrgus’ "Dead Girls" while the one from "Tinker Tanner" sounds like something Hansi Kursch would feel at home singing. The songwriting sticks to a couple of general motifs so while those songs stick out, there are others on Riptime that sound very similar and there’s a rolling drum fill that gets uses quite often and quickly loses its appeal. At the end of the day, Riptime has a few more strong points than weak ones, so if you’re looking for fist-pumping, air guitar-wielding metal that is a bit different, Mega Colossus is a band to check out.
