Having been a big fan of Crossover/Hardcore-Punk/Thrash Metal for four decades already, I’m always up for new bands trying to capture the vibes, attitude, and blood alcohol content of the golden era of the style. Thrashtalk are a young French band that do just that with their full-length debut, Cold Beer, Space Dick (I admire the imagination of that album title, let me tell you). With song titles like "Kill to Drink," "Darwin Awards", and "Bar Closing", you probably figured out that this should be familiar to anyone who’s heard essential acts like Crumbsuckers, Suicidal Tendencies, and The Accüsed, so let me answer the real question and say that this has all the untamed aggression, tongue-in-cheek lyrics, and complete lack of serious intent you would ever want from your Crossover, only they also throw in some slower stomping passages for additional heaviness and variety. The guitar work is relentless and energetic, even flashing a bit of Slayer’s evil energy with the solos on "Alien Attack," and vocalist Frédéric Anger sounds a good bit like Kirt Brecht with some Mark Oseguada thrown in for his high-pitched screams. There’s not much more to say about it, so if you’re like me and can never get enough ‘80s Crossover Thrash, then Thrashtalk have your next course for you served with a nice cold beer. |
