I see this getting billed as "rock" in places, but I am not hearing that at all. Scarlet Reign are a two-person studio project that is definitely in the vein of female-fronted Doom bands like Jex Thoth or Blood Ceremony, except that Scarlet Reign are much less avowedly retro than other bands of this style. The guitar work is sharp, and the riffs mix in a lot of Trad Metal along with the expected Doom stylings. Vocalist "Red" has a smooth contralto voice with a lot of expressiveness and a mournful tone. The band conjures up some really good, haunting melodies that make these songs genuinely sound melancholy. This is an independent release, but quite a good one. |
