Taake released three 10" splits since the beginning of this continuing (at the time of writing) pandemic—I've reviewed a couple of them—and Avvik is a compilation of all of the band's tracks from those splits. It's a good way for fans of the band to get only those tracks, whether it's a financial thing or just that they're not interested in the other band(s) on the splits, but that's about it. This is one case where things sound kind of disjointed and overall I found myself getting kind of bored even though I liked the songs on the splits. They just don't work all that great when put all together—your mileage may vary, of course, as this is highly subjective. The tracks have been remixed and remastered for this release, and there's an acoustic version "Nattestid ser Porten vid I" that I'm not particularly fond of as it stands out here and not in a good way (Disclaimer: I don't like acoustic versions of, well, anything). Anyway, this is not bad per se and I'm sure some people will appreciate this more than me, but personally I prefer the split format when it comes to the songs presented here. |
