This was the first release from L.A.'s Death Metal troopers Sadistic Intent I got my hands on way back in 1990, around the time Death Metal bands were popping up like mushrooms after a hard rain at the end of summer. In those days, bands were mostly made up of twenty-somethings with no means of distribution or marketing, so many of them lived or died depending on whether or not any label big or small took an interest. Sadistic Intent were among the lucky ones and got signed to Wild Rags Records, who would unleash them and their debut EP Impending Doom... onto an unsuspecting underground.

Unsurprisingly, this is a raw and unpolished version of the band, with an unfiltered production and playing that suggested they were still in the process of learning their instruments. That might make you think this isn't any good, but you have to remember this is Sadistic Fucking Intent we're talking about here. Even at their earliest and least professional, they knew how to churn out uncompromising Death Metal assaults that'll tear your damn head off, and the four songs on here hold up so well that they became staples of their live shows long after, with "Morbid Faith" in particular being a crowd pleaser on their sets. Vocals were handled by ex-member Enrique Chavez, and while he's no Bay Cortez, he rips his lungs out admirably and works well with the material he's given.

Overall, this is the band at their most primordial and basic, and while it's hardly their best release, Impending Doom... would end up blowing the doors open for one of the best bands to come out of L.A. Not the first Sadistic Intent album I'd recommend, but I'd recommend it all the same.
