Asphyx are a frigging institution by now, having been ripping out Death Metal albums for three decades and producing some acknowledged classics. They took a long break in the aughts, but otherwise they have been an almost prototypical band—hell, they have been signed to Century Media since before some of you were born. Now centered around bassist/vocalist Martin Van Drunen, the band contains none of the original lineup, and yet the sound and quality of this 10th album never wavers in the slightest.

Asphyx stand for one thing: DEATH METAL. Crunchy, heavy, savage Death Metal that relies on riffing and heaviness rather than speed, and this album is a workout in exactly what this band has always been about. The riffs are punishing, Van Drunen's vocals are as intense as ever, and the sound is thick and brutal. The songwriting walks that line between classic and modern, so it never sounds dated, but still sits right alongside such classic works as The Rack or Crush the Cenotaph. The lyrics, it has to be said, are not that great, but then that was never one of Asphyx's strong points anyway.

This is just a feast for Death Metal fans, and there is stuff on here to stack up to the band's best works. I mean, crank up shit like "Mount Skull" and you will hear Death Metal refined to a bone-crushing edge like few bands ever manage. You just can't argue with a band that's been around this long and still produces music this good.
