This album didn't click with me as much as it did for many others, and I had to let it grow on me. After several listens I realized it wasn't so much the album as it was a couple of tracks that stuck out like a sore thumb for me, most notable the title track: I don't like the music nor the vocal lines much and it sticks out so much that it was what I remembered the most once the album was over. So, let's forget that one is on there because for the most part, The Coffin Train is filled with killer tracks that are very much in the vein of Diamond Head's classic material, but with more experience in the songwriting and tighter, more experience musicianship, something the rerecorded Lightning for the Nations 2020 benefitted from and resulted in something better than the original. The first two tracks, "Belly of the Beast" and "The Messenger" are exactly the kind of catchy, powerful tunes you expect from Diamond Head, and there's more of that where that came from. Call it genuine NWOBHM with a modern sauce, rather than hopping on trends, with The Coffin Train the band stuck to their roots and showed they can nonetheless sound fresh and actual doing it. "The Coffin Train" and "Shades of Black", coincidentally next to each order in the track listing, are two songs that I personally prefer to ignore. They're not bad songs per se and they do have their moments (some cool guitar work and in there), and many people are likely to even pick them as favourites, but for me they're overall just too melodramatic and stand out too much and feel out of place. This kind of stuff is highly subjective but hey, it's my review. ;) Nitpicking aside, The Coffin Train is a top-notch album from a band that sounds like it still has a lot to offer. |
