Blazon Stone is another of guitarist Ced Forsberg's "tribute" bands, this one worshiping at the pirate-themed altar of Running Wild, and Forsberg hits the nail squarely on the head. Return to Port Royal: Definitive Edition is the re-recorded version of the band's debut and, as I said, truly channels the German pioneer's pirate power metal sound. Double-kick drums, crunchy riffs and gravelly vocals highlight "Return to Port Royal," "Curse of the Ghost Ship," and "Wind in the Sails," songs sure to get your pulse racing. More mid-paced cuts like "Stand Your Line" and "Beasts of War" are air-guitar fodder (or smashing flagons together if you aren't all that musical) and we even get a solid cover of "Black Wings of Death" from Running Wild's Pile of Skulls album. Obviously, if you don't like crunchy, Euro power metal in general or Running Wild in particular, you aren't going to find much here to change your mind. On the other hand, if you can't get enough Running Wild or power metal that gets your blood pumping, this is most certainly an album that will fit the bill. And the re-recording sounds great making it a nice upgrade if you already own the original. |
