Theotoxin play some pretty decent black/death metal on this album, with some faster cuts that are very reminiscent of the '90s Scandinavian speedy black metal bands, and that hits you in the face pretty hard and early. They also do into the much slower, almost doom stuff that's dark, crushing and heavy with a vibe that gives an uneasy feeling of evil and depression. Some stuff is more geared toward death metal which then turns into something more akin to mid to fast-paced melodic black metal. Definitely not a boring album as they play a lot with the genres and keep the listeners on their toes by taking unexpected turns; a daring bet, and they actually pull it off and the songs work well together despite the sometimes drastic changes out of nowhere. Did I mention that the songs are kind of catchy? Not always a given in the genre. Top that with some really crunchy and razor-sharp guitar work, punishing drums and top-notch vocals. I'm surprised I haven't seen more chatter about this band over the years. |
