The Grotesquery play fast, precise and diversified death metal that is surprisingly catchy. You get all the heaviness, growls and menacing vibe you would expect from pure death metal, but there's a lot here that reminds me of Gothenburg-style melodic death metal, traditional heavy metal and thrash. The result is a little all over the place, but they somehow made it work into a coherent, well-flowing whole. The songs are good, but it's the seamless switch between genres that has made this album a regular on my playlist for the past few weeks as it just doesn't get boring. Some bands try to mix things up like this and fail, but these guys have done a good job of it. Unfortunately, it looks like the band has now split up. Too bad, because I could have used more of this. :) |
