Temple of Nihil are a Black Metal act from Russia, and they harness the dark and primal atmosphere of unforgiving winters in Siberian forests where men go to meet a grim destiny on their debut, Schadenfreude. Alright, that's enough metaphors for now. The music here is grim and primitive, similar to the likes of very early Immortal and Dark Funeral with a bit of a doomy touch similar to Finland's Barathrum. The songs are mostly stripped down and simple, but they carry that all-important cold, grim atmosphere with gusto. They try to vary things with the sound-effect laden "Htrib" and the calmer, more spacious and atmospheric second half of "Postbeing", and these break up the general chaos enough to help this from getting too repetitive and predictable. Bottom line, this is a consistently solid debut of blackened ferocity that bodes well for the band's future, and warrants a look for those in need of something grim and traditional. |
