Astral Sleep used to be on Solitude Productions, but since they left that label I stopped getting their promos and they fell off my radar. I always liked this band, considering them more adventurous and musically interesting than a lot of Doom/Death bands. I am glad to see their chops have not diminished over the years. This is still an album of fairly conventional Doom/Death music, or rather, Doom with harsh vocals, as Astral Sleep largely avoid the crispier sound of Death, opting for slow, melodic Doom licks. Vocalist Markus Heinonen sounds good when he uses his harsh attack, but his clean vocals often sound strained this time out, and I would rather he had just not used them at all. Still, this is a meaty album of addictive Doom riffs and solid songwriting. I don't think it's their best work, but it is their most accessible. |
