In Timeless Haunt we have another band featuring at least one member whose identity is unknown (the creatively named "Unknown Vocalist") hitting the scene with their debut EP, Haunted Symphony. The band's goal is to do something "different" from what has already been done, something I'm sure we can all agree is a noble goal. What strikes me, however, is how much the opening track ("March of Death") sounds like Faith No More with its slow pace, subliminal keys and half-sung, half-spoken/barked vocals or how the vocal melodies on "Darkness Falls" sounds like they were lifted from Alice in Chains' Dirt album. So much for sounding different. Haunted Symphony is a mildly progressive effort with a streak of groove that provides the whole package with a modern vibe. I give the band credit for setting out to do something new but when I can clearly pick out specific influences with little or no effort, I have to say they've fallen short of their goal. The performances are professional, and the sound is excellent so maybe you'll like Timeless Haunt's music more than me. |
