You ever wonder what a thrashier version of Death's Leprosy would sound like? Well, good news, so did San Antonio, Texas Death/Thrash act Aggravator, and they decided to go ahead and do it on this self-titled EP. This release is filled with dark, ripping riffs that would make Chuck proud, played at Slayer's Hell Awaits-era intensity, and when you top it off with singer/guitarist Derek Jones sounding like the deranged bastard offspring of Chuck Schuldiner and Tom Araya (never mind the mechanics of how that would work), you get an EP that, despite its brevity, skins most modern releases three times its length alive. Some top-notch songwriting holds it all together, sporting enough attitude and ferocity to make posers within a 50-mile radius flee in sheer terror. If this is what they can do in less than 20 minutes, then I need to check out their full-length material, and if you're a fan of early Death or Slayer, you should absolutely do the same after getting this. Highly recommended. |
