If the band name, font used for said name and album title, Land of Eternal Dreams, didn't scream "symphonic metal" to you, where have you been hiding for the last 20+ years? Despite the clichés, Italy's (yes, of course the band is from Italy) Astralium is a competent and entertaining band and this, their debut, has an accomplished and mature sound. The vocals are excellent, with plenty of range and emotion, the keyboards share space with the guitars and the melodies are lush and smooth. The big knock on Land of Eternal Dreams is that even though it sounds wonderful, there's nothing you haven't heard a hundred times before from scores of bands. There are the "big riff" numbers, the "double-kick" speedsters and the "soulful ballad" which means Astralium will please existing Ancient Bards/Xandria/Amberian Dawn/Visions of Atlantis/etc. fans but may not possess much crossover appeal to those in other genres. This is a solid effort from Astralium, despite a lack of originality, and I'll be watching for the band to take it to the next level with album number two.
