I've been listening to this album regularly for several weeks now and, I must say, it is quite addictive. This Croatian band, simply put, does melodic black metal right. Do not walk away because of "melodic"; this is not watered-down black metal in the slightest. Tryglav play it raw and sharp enough to get just the right amount of aggression in, and the vocals also fit that mould. The omnipresent melodic aspect is not about prettiness but rather about bringing in a depressive and haunting atmosphere that can be bone-chilling at times. The music also borrows a lot from traditional heavy metal, so this is not some hyperblasting superfast black metal, but something more mid-paced and with heaviness to boot. I've often played this on repeat for several hours without getting tired of it, so there's definitely some staying power here. One hell of a debut. |
