Eugenic Death plays metal that is sort of in between late '80s thrash and early death metal on their second record, Under the Knife. The guitar work is solid, if not inventive, with lyrics that are relatively simple but steer clear of the sociopolitical screeds many bands they are emulating had their stock and trade in. The vocals are a proto-death growl that are gravelly yet understandable and, to my ears, sound quite a lot like Wargasm's Bob Mayo. Despite the Repka-esque artwork and a song that features Indian chanting ("Hara Shiva") Under the Knife bears a strong resemblance to Wargasm's Why Play Around? Eugenic Death aren't doing anything new but Under the Knife is well executed so if you fancy some late '80s thrash with no modern affectations (other than the production), it is definitely worth checking out. |
