Curse of the Sky is the debut album from Finland's Iron Griffin, a female-fronted band that plays a doomy, atmospheric style of heavy metal. The guitars are heavily reverbed, and the thick, hazy riffs and clear, keening vocals give me an image of what Sabbath might have sounded like with Grace Slick at the microphone. "Exciting" is not the adjective I would use to describe the music on Curse of the Sky, it is more contemplative, and I envision it backing a tabletop RPG marathon or maybe a night around the hookah. The playing is simple and direct with Iron Griffin letting their songwriting speak for itself. A solid debut.
