The Flaying hail from Quebec City and, like a hell of a lot of bands out of the province of Quebec, their weapon of choice is technical death metal. That's not exactly my cup of tea (I mean, pint of beer), but Angry, Undead is actually pretty cool as far as the genre goes. Unsurprisingly, this is mostly fast as fuck with clickety drums to boot, but where things get interesting is all the little melodies that burst out of the speedfest here and there, making for quite a bit of variety and ensuring things never get boring. Some bits and pieces remind me a little of Ottawa's Cholera (another technical death metal outfit). On occasion the vocals are kind of the "pig squeal" type which I find to be a turn-off, but for the most part it's your basic, run-of-the-mill death growls. At just under 30 minutes, Angry, Undead is over quickly but The Flaying made sure that they used that time very well.
