I was all set to hate this. I have been generally liking the stuff Adipocere come up with as far as Pagan Black Metal, but this is clearly grindcore. From the stupid cover art and the lame band name to the logo that looks almost exactly like Cannibal Corpse's, I was sure I had a major shitpile on my hands.

But once again, Adipocere have not let me down, as this is actually pretty cool. The cover and the song titles make this look like a pure grind band, but actually this is much closer to death metal with some grind touches. Not bad death metal either, for frogs. Hey I warned you. The thing I usually hate about Grind is that the bands concentrate on playing as fast and abrasive as possible, without actually producing recognizable songs. Thankfully, GG are not of that school, and they write short but smart little blasts packed with some pretty fucking cool riffs, there are even some slower parts. Imagine that! A grind band who play slower parts! Vocals range from the super-guttural grunt that Barney from Napalm Death really should have patented back in the day, to a raspy shriek that doesn't sound as convincing, but does provide some relief from the low-register snarling.

Now this is grindy death metal, so you can't make out the lyrics at all, but there are recognizable verses and choruses you can grunt along with. Recognizable song structures! Another grind first!

The album cover is supremely stupid, and I really, really hate this band's name. The info says they used to be called Abyss Gate, which they really should have stuck with. If you look closely at their logo, you will find yourself wishing you had not.

This is a shocking album in that I actually enjoyed it, even though it is part of a subgenre I despise. Grindcore fans should hunt this down immediately, as this is a really killer band within their chosen style. While I cannot say that Genital Grinder are for me, they certainly do not suck, and fans of the style should probably crank my rating up a point or so. If you like Napalm Death and Cannibal Corpse, then this is a must-have, as neither of those bands have ever produced an album this enjoyable.
