This was the first official release by Mayhem and, man, I'd like to see the face of anyone back then who had no idea what this was and got eased in by that awesome intro, only to run into a wall of raw fucking black metal. The vocals alone are right out of a goddamn nightmare. It's a style we're used to these days but, back in 1993? That wasn't exactly common. Deathcrush is messy, basic, fast, raw and just has that aura of insanity that helped make Mayhem their name. The cover of Venom's "Witching Hour" almost makes the original sound like an artsy piece, though it's definitely recognizable. This may not be the greatest thing compared to what's been released in the genre in the past 26 years or so, but it's a building block of Norwegian black metal and pretty much a must have. And, seriously, you just gotta love that intro. |
