It's been four years since Skull Fist released Chasing the Dream, but they are finally back with their third album, Way of the Road. Traditional heavy metal of the high-pitched vocals, galloping bass and twin-guitars variety is what these Canadians play and it's some fine driving to the show, friends in the back, windows rolled all the way down and the stereo cranking music. Like the last album, the songs are 80s-inspired affairs that don't try to be anything else but rock and roll. There's nothing revolutionary here but that isn't the point. To my mind, Way of the Road sounds like a mashup of Riot's Fire Down Under and Thundersteel, which is very cool. This is what heavy metal sounded like back in the early to mid-80s and there's a reason bands keep the sound alive; it rocks. |
