Asgrauw hail from the Netherlands and offer us some no-frills black metal deeply rooted in the early-to-mid-90s Scandinavian scene. Nothing fancy here: Fast guitars but an overall mid-paced beat, raspy/screechy vocals that you expect in the genre, and a rather melancholic and doomy vibe that fits their apocalyptic thematic, all glued together with the anger and brutality that comes as a main ingredient for the genre. Some passages remind me a lot of early Burzum without sounding like they're just copying the sound. It's a little bit monotone and lacks diversity, but I find it's a really good fit for those times when all you want is a wall of mid to fast-paced and somewhat melancholic black metal. |
