It's not my habit to review compilations (or live albums, reissues, covers albums, etc.) but when Trapped Under Ice: The New Face of Canadian Heavy Metal Vol. 1 came across my review queue and I saw it was from Temple of Mystery Records which has a reputation for solid releases, I figured why not give it a spin. I'm really glad I did as this is a first-rate collection of Canadian bands from a number of different genres showing off their best stuff in one place. You get metal of the speed (Traveler, Metalian, Emblem), traditional (Cauchemar, Starlight Ritual), thrash (Barrow Wight), black/thrash (Occult Burial, Blackrat), hard rock/heavy (Freeways) and even occult/space rock (Spell) stripes, and there isn't a bad cut to be found. Sure, you may not appreciate all the genres on display but if you are looking for an album that exemplifies the "variety is the spice of life" ideal, look no further. Personally, the speed metal from Traveler, Metalian and Emblem makes me salivate thinking of what metallic treasures full-length albums from these bands might contain but as I said, there are no bad songs here and there is a lot to look forward to. I can't help but be reminded if hearing those early Metal Massacre compilations from Metal Blade for the first time back in the 80s. Yeah, Trapped Under Ice is that good. Highly recommended.
